Gastronomic encounters

On this page we will include details of various local gastronomic adventures with details of the places visited so that you too can enjoy.

Ferme Auberge La Chaume des Buis

Our first encounter with the Ferme Auberge La Chaume des Buis was on a whim. It is situated just outside of Nolay above a hamlet called Cirey.  It is reached by turning right in the middle of Nolay main road and following the Ferme Auberge signs.  We were greeted by large numbers of cows and pigs as we arrived at what appeared to be the top of a mountain.

The views are spectacular as is the food.  The restaurant specialises in pork, and all food produced is home grown or home-made.  When you arrive, you are greeted with a menu de jour - no choice!!!!  However, this is what we were offered:

STARTER: Terrine with homemade bread
MAIN: Civet de porc avec pommes de terre
CHEESE: Fromage blanc
SWEET: Pain des epices avec creme Anglais

The cost for the entire meal was 22 Euros each plus wine.  The quantity of food was almost too much for us, but we were left in a blissful haze of satisfaction, amazed at the quality of this wonderful food.  Everything was home produced with pork, milk, cheese, bread, potatoes and honey coming from the farm.  There is an excellent and not too bewildering selection of wines as well, from the humble yet refreshing Aligote to the more statesman-like Meursault Premier Cru at quite reasonable prices.

We have tried many of the local restaurants - many claiming to be gastronomic experiences, but this was truly an experience not to be missed.  We had true value for money with food of an amazingly high quality - an experience which is going to be difficult to top: and the views across the Haut Cote de Beaune and down the Cozanne Valley have to be the best in the area.

There are many Fermes Augerges in France and you can check them out at www.bienvenue-a-la-ferme.com for other gastronomic experiences. Each farm has its own speciality so be prepared to experience every possible taste from chicken, beef, pork, and even goat!

Bon appetit!
